Temperatures soar in NW, too few air-conditioners

When I moved to Seattle from Oklahoma City in 1990- I lived in a nice duplex on Capitol Hill overlooking Lake Union. When I first toured the unit with my would-be landlord, I asked where the air-conditioner control was located. He laughed and explained, "Oh, there are only a few days every summer that you would actually need an air-conditioner. Most people don't have one."

What a JOKE!

I found out that first summer that I needed an air-conditioner something fierce. Brutal on the "few days" one needs an air-conditioner. Honestly, who in their right mind would suffer through nights of sleeping in a house that feels like an oven? Not me. Thankfully I had an old Sears window-unit from my days in OKC. And it's been humming every summer since.

It's humming right now and I'm proud to report that my library, which includes a sleeping nook, is a cool 70=degrees at this very moment. Lovely. The sleeping weather's fine.

I grew up in Texas where the 100-degree PLUS days stretch months on end. I spent decades in that part of the country- in Kansas, Oklahoma and the prairie lands. BRUTAL HOT. And of course, everyone has air-conditioning. There are 300-plus days of sunshine a year in that part of the country. I've had enough summer to last me ten lifetimes. I detest it.

I'm baffled that ANYONE would not save-up and shell out a hundred bucks for a window unit to keep at least the sleeping area cool. Honestly, the new energy efficient units do not eat that much power and it's really a small price to pay for a good night's sleep.

Robert Blevins - AB of Seattle

I first moved to the Seattle area in 1967 or so, and back then you really DIDN'T need an AC. But, the effects of global climate change have likely had their effects since then.

Now I have two upstairs and one unit downstairs. Yesterday I had to put on a second shirt. (laughs)

I was amazed to hear it was supposed to hit 108 degrees in Hanford today. Even for Hanford, that's HOT.

Hey, Eric and Robert, I don't have and don't want air conditioners. I stay perfectly cool with fans and tubs of cold water when it gets really deadly here in southern Ontario (no we don't live in igloos:-) IMO, air conditioners are only needed for working at a fairly active job, such as resident care aid for example. Fans use a lot less power; a good ceiling fan over my bed beats an air conditioner any day. Having said all that, I do look forward to winter in the midst of the really dog days.

Robert. I agree with you. I honestly think I've seen a shift in just the last 18 years that I've lived in Seattle.

gladbutterfly. I salute you and honor your position. And I think you make a very good point- It's all about comfort. For me-- after decades in HEAT WORLD (Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita)-- I've expired on summer.

    Keep cool.
